Episodic or Serial | Podcast Publication Type

The publication type describes the relation between your podcast episodes.

Episodic

Listeners can play the episodes in any order, for example interviews or news. Apple Podcasts shows the newest episodes first. Other apps can have their own order settings.

Serial

The episodes follow a sequence. You can put them into seasons. Apple Podcasts uses the supplied episode and season numbers for its display.

The Podigee setting

Select the publication type before you publish the podcast. For a published podcast, the selection in the general podcast settings is disabled.

If you need to change the type of an existing podcast, contact support. Do not unpublish the podcast only for this change. Do not delete episodes. A type change can have an effect on numbering, URLs and app display.

The RSS feed uses <itunes:type> for the publication type. App functions and available Podigee fields are different. Apple can also show supplied season data for episodic shows.

Does publication type change the frequency label?

No. Episodic and serial describe the listening order. Labels such as weekly or twice monthly describe the release frequency. Changing <itunes:type> is not a correction for a frequency label.

Apple documents an Update Frequency field for shows created in Apple Podcasts Connect without an RSS feed. This does not establish the same editable field for every RSS-based show. Open your existing show in Apple Podcasts Connect and check its available settings. If the frequency cannot be edited there, ask Apple Support about that show.

Include the Apple show URL, the displayed label, and your intended schedule. Do not unpublish the podcast or change it to serial to correct this label. See Apple's show information and submission guide for the distinction between show setup methods.
